SOUTH SUDAN MISSION WORK: PROGRESS REPORT

Recently, the Nigerian Baptist Convention through her Mission agency, ‘The Global Missions Board’, penetrated South Sudan. The Board serves on the field with Victory Baptist Church, Ajah as partner. The land is wide with a population of about 8 million people. South Sudan suffered a civil war which lasted about 20 years. There are over 60 indigenous languages in South Sudan only. We have a handful number of denominations working in the land. Examples are: The Catholic Church and The Anglican Church to mention a few. Christians in South Sudan have the highest figure, about 60.5%, Muslims are 6.2% while the adherents of traditional worship are 32.9%.

The missionary to The South Sudan Mission Field is Rev. M.L Giwa of GMB. He and his live in Juba, the capital city of the country.  To the glory of God, worship has started at Nuru Baptist Church with an average attendance of 53 people including children. Our missionaries also are interacting to network with other Christian bodies in the land. There is an on-going plan to build a church at Nuru and Juba. We are also working hard to secure the official registration of our ministry. Pray that the Lord of Missions will favour us for the quick registration.

Plans for the Mission Work in South Sudan

1.     To build a city church in Juba Town. A plot of land is about 7,500 dollars.

2.     To build a mission house in Juba. Having a mission house is less expensive compared to renting an apartment.

3.     We desire to bring together all existing Baptist Churches in South Sudan and register them under a convention. Presently, we discovered that there are over 100 Baptist churches scattered, working and existing independently without a unified cooperate body.

4.     To survey and work effectively among the major ethnic groups in South Sudan for Mission work.

5.     We have a plan to register the NBC work with the government of South Sudan

How You Can Be Involved

1.     You can lead your church to key into the above plans for South Sudan mission

2.     Provide a project vehicle for the missionaries. This is a matter of priority as far as the ministry in South Sudan is concerned.

3.     Based on how expensive rent is in Juba, churches are encouraged to support the building of a mission house for the mission work in South Sudan.
